Patiala is one of the aristocratic cities of Punjab which is known for its tradition and culture. It is situated at a distance of 65 km from Chandigarh. The term Patiala is derived from the word ‘Pati’ which means the ‘land’ of Baba Ali Singh, who was the founder of Patiala. It is the commanding headquarters of Patiala district. Patiala has achieved its prominence in social, religious, political, cultural, music, arts and academic fields in the state of Punjab.

The climate of Patiala is quite similar to that of the rest of Punjab. Summers are extremely hot and winters are too cold. May is the hottest month with the temperature reaching approximately 43 degrees Celsius and January is the coolest month with a minimum temperature of 2 degrees Celsius. Monsoon lasts here for approximately three months.

The word Patiala Peg came into existence as it was linked to the “larger than life” lifestyle of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. The other unique items such as the Patiala traditional shoes and costumes are all reminiscent of the royal lifestyles that the Maharajas led. For instance, The King of Patiala in olden days had his traditional outfit as Patiala Salwar. This dress, which was not affordable by a common man due to the excessive amount of cloth used due to which it was mostly worn by the royal families, is now a popular Indian garment favored by modern Indian women and foreigners as well.

Patiala has so much to offer to its tourists. Most important places of attraction are Qila Mubarak, Rang Mahal, Darbar Hall, Lassi Khana, Moti Bagh Palace, Baradari Garden, Gurudwara Dukhniwaran Sahib, Maiji Di Sarai, Panj Bali Gurudwara, Kali Temple, Chhatbir Zoo etc. Since Patiala is famous for its jooti and phulkari items, local markets are the best places to buy these stuff. You will also find a market for mouth watering pickles which is located near Sirhindi gate and is called the Aachar Bazaar.

Patiala has a wide range of hotels starting from budget, deluxe to star hotels. Some of the budget hotels in Patiala are Harpavittar International, Green’s, Kaka International etc. Luxury and star hotels like Dhillon Residency, Narain Continental are well known for their hospitality, ambience and food. Best food joints are Greens Restaurant, Silver Spoon Restaurant, Balwant Singh Ahuja Restaurant and Suraj Fast Food Restaurant.

Besides tradition and culture, Patiala also plays a significant role in the field of education and sports. Patiala University is a renowned university in the northern part of the country. With its rich cultural heritage, this city is an attractive option for tourists in the state of Punjab.
